A MESSAGE FROM YOUR RETREAT CO-HOSTS:

Joshua Tree is unlike any other place we’ve been. There’s a special alchemy that happens when you combine the dramatic desert boulders and plant life, wide open spaces, epic sunsets, and starry night skies with the high concentration of artists, musicians, writers, and other creative types drawn to the area. Come experience it with us, and you’ll see why Eva and her family make a pilgrimage to this special place every year. You might even start doing the same.

As you can imagine, carving out time from our busy schedules to go within, commune with nature, and connect with other kind, curious, and creative humans will be incredibly restorative. We’ll come away from this retreat feeling transformed, having filled our inner stores of inspiration and armed ourselves with fresh creative practices.

Now, doesn’t that sound amazing? We’re so excited and can’t wait to see you there!

“Such an AMAZING experience that I am beyond words to describe how much I truly appreciate the inspiration and joy I felt for my heart and soul. After being so cooped up these last few years and seeing so many things taken away, this experience is an amazing start to a really important next chapter of my life that I will be forever grateful for.”

Retreat Schedule

DAY 1

Welcome to Joshua Tree! We’ll be here at the perfect time of year. Weather in October is usually sunny and warm——but not too hot——with cool evenings. We’ll arrange to pick you up this afternoon from a designated central location in the town of Joshua Tree. Then we’ll whisk you off to our gorgeous retreat location. It’s only a few minutes drive, but it feels like a world away.

Next is our casual opening gathering where we’ll be able to meet each other, enjoy drinks and tasty bites, participate in a fun (optional) creative activity, and explore the beautiful home, grounds, and surrounding landscape of our retreat home base.

Afterwards, we’ll go over the plan and logistics for the week, answering any questions that may pop up.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy a lovely candlelit dinner on site, created for us by 2 local woman chefs who are known for their seasonal ingredients, delicious dishes, and beautiful presentation.

DAY 2

This morning, we’ll enjoy the signature Creative by Design workshop. We’ll explore the ideas of tapping into our own personal taste, finding creative inspiration that resonates with each of us, letting go of fear, and being intentional about practices. This workshop is inclusive of all different creative styles, levels of practice, types of projects, etc. Like we mentioned above, we truly believe everyone is creative and that we can ALL benefit from exploring this side of ourselves.

Then we’ll have a little free time to rest, chat, etc. while we prepare for lunch and our afternoon activities.

We’re off to have a picnic on a boulder at a favorite spot in the Joshua Tree National Park.

Next, we’ll take a leisurely hiking loop through one of the most diverse and interesting parts of the park. We’ll be able to climb boulders (if we want), see cholla cacti, ocotillo, and other desert plant life, smell the unmistakable scent of creosote, take in amazing vistas of blue skies and red cliffs, and feel the fresh air in our lungs.

Then we’ll head to a legendary area of the park where we’ll learn the story of a famous artist who's tied to that spot. We’ll have free time to explore, take photos, meditate, sketch, or whatever our hearts desire.

Before leaving the park, we’ll head up to the top of a nearby mountain for an incredible vista that extends across the Coachella Valley, all the way to Palm Springs.

And finally, we’ll have dinner at an atmospheric local spot known for Caribbean influenced cuisine and the best food in the valley.

Back at the retreat house this evening, we’ll meet in our groups once again, this time for intimate salon meetings where everyone will have the chance to safely share a creative project, idea, or dilemma with the group and receive constructive feedback and/or resource recommendations in return.  Again, we are all creative and any and all types of creative subjects are welcome!

DAY 3

Today we’ll start with a series of round table discussions led by experts in each creative topic. You’ll be free to choose which discussion to join, and have the chance to dive deep and ask all kinds of questions. This will be such a great resource!

Then we’ll have a little free time to rest, chat, go for a quick walk, etc. while we prepare for lunch and our afternoon activities.

Next, we’ll break up into our smaller groups again for our afternoon activities.

Before heading out on our adventure, we’ll have a tasty picnic lunch on the patio of our retreat location.

This afternoon, we’ll go to the beautiful studio of a local ceramic artist who will teach us how to create pots from scratch. No experience necessary and all levels are welcome.

Afterwards, we’ll have free time to explore the charming vintage and design shops in old town Yucca Valley. The California desert is known throughout the world for its great vintage and old town Yucca Valley is a stronghold, plus there are some great design shops carrying new goods as well. As with all our moments of free time, if you’d like recommendations of what to do, see, etc. we are happy to help.

For dinner, we’ll eat at a spot with enchanting vibes that was a favorite of the Rat Pack back in the 1950s. It’s been restored in recent years and the food, drinks, and sunset views are all stellar.

Tonight we’ll reconvene at our retreat home base for a drawing night with a local artist. He’ll bring paper, colored pencils, markers and more, and we’ll have the chance to spread out on the various tables——drawing, doodling, chatting, and relaxing to our heart’s content. Again, all levels welcome! If you’re not someone who draws much, no worries. Here’s your chance, judgment free. Our artist host will be there to help and offer tips for whoever would like, but this is more of a vibe and a party than an actual workshop. There will be records and drinks, too!

DAY 4

Erin will start us off with an inspiring nature photo walk, sharing photo tips, and pointing out local flora and fauna along the way. After the walk, we’ll return back to the retreat house for a photo editing workshop where we’ll learn specific principles and techniques for making our photos really shine. (No special equipment necessary other than your cell phone. All levels welcome.)

Then we’ll have a little free time to rest, chat, go for a quick walk, etc. while we prepare for lunch and our afternoon activities.

This afternoon, we’ll have a tasty picnic lunch on the patio of our retreat location.

Then we’ll be joined by a local yoga instructor (who also happens to be a multi-faceted artist) to share a restorative yoga practice with us. (All levels welcome.) We’ll finish with a deeply soothing sound bath, setting us up for an afternoon of calm.

Another inspiring workshop this afternoon! This time, Erin is guiding us through some beautiful writing prompts. No matter what your occupation, we all have a use for brushing up our writing skills, whether it’s for work emails, photo captions, that novel you’ve been meaning to write, or anything else. You might be surprised at how much enjoyment and catharsis you find during this brief hour.

In the late afternoon, we’ll have free time to enjoy the retreat location and take a dip in the pool, go on another nature walk, write in our journals, browse the art and design books on hand, chat with our friends, nap on the patio loungers, or whatever feels right to you.

We’ll come together over another delicious catered meal from a great local spot that specializes in tasty Indian food. It’s all so good and the naan is to die for!

Finally, we’ll gather together at the retreat house for informal creative chats, drinks and treats, stargazing into the majestic Dark Skies of Joshua Tree… maybe even a dip in the hot tub.

DAY 5

Free time this morning to sleep in, go on a hike, get breakfast at a cafe in town, or however you feel called to spend your last morning of the retreat.

In the early afternoon, Eva will lead a workshop on visual journaling. We’ll have fun with collage, washi tape, stickers, bits of paper ephemera, instant photos, and more as we document the time we’ve spent together during our retreat, cementing the magical memories in our psyches. During the workshop, we’ll enjoy a fresh and tasty boxed lunch from another local purveyor.

Then we’ll have a little free time to rest, chat, go for a quick walk, etc. while we prepare for our afternoon excursion.

Next, we’ll take a trip to an otherworldly outdoor desert art museum. A renowned LA artist spent the last 15 years of his life creating large-scale assemblage sculptures that fill 10 acres. We’ll learn the fascinating story of this artist and this place from an art professional who worked closely with the artist during his life.

Back at the retreat house, we’ll have one more creative duscussion to share what’s on our mind as the retreat comes to a close, set intentions for moving forward, ask for more feedback on creative projects, or whatever we each decide to share with the group. (By the way, you can always opt out of being in the hot seat, if you prefer.)

For our last dinner, a pizza place beloved by Morongo Valley locals will come to the house and make us fresh pies on the spot. What a treat!

After dinner, we'll say our goodbyes over drinks, sweets, and more music——surrounded by the beautiful desert that’s kept us company us all week. We’ll all come away feeling inspired and replenished for whatever comes next!

Eva Jorgensen Travel reserves the right to change the program because of local schedules, weather, if something new and delightful becomes available, etc.

If you have any food allergies, please let us know as soon as you apply so we can make arrangements to accommodate you as best we can. Reach out to hello@evajorgensen.com with any questions.

FAQ

WILL I GEL WITH THE GROUP?

  • Short answer, yes! If you’ve read through this entire retreat info page and it feels like a great fit for you, then you’ll be a great fit for the group, too. Looking forward to meeting you. ♥️

  • For these trips and retreats, we welcome a diverse group of travelers——age, race, background, occupation, sexual orientation, gender, location, etc. (More on this below.) This makes our experience more rich as we each bring different skills, experience, knowledge, and more to the table. That said, because we’re all drawn to this kind of retreat, we all share a love of creativity, travel, beautiful things, artists, under-the-radar gems, as well as an openness, kindness, and curiosity about the world. So in that sense, we end up finding out that we have much more in common than not. It’s a beautiful thing to see unfold and honestly, you’ll probably be surprised at how quickly the group gels and how much our bonds with our fellow travelers enrich our overall experience. In fact, this seems to always end up being one of our travelers’ favorite aspects of the trip.

  • One of our past travelers described our trips and retreats as “group travel for people who don’t like group travel”, and we think that’s pretty accurate, ha! There isn’t a typical guide with a microphone and a red umbrella, no giant tour bus, no pat explanations or memorized speeches you have to sit through. We connect with locals, keep the group size small, and focus on lesser known (yet utterly delightful) places. Of course, there are also people who come on our trips who love the more typical group travel experience, too.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE TRIP PRICING?

  • Everything mentioned in the above schedule.

  • A retreat designer (Eva Jorgensen) who is passionate about doing extremely thorough research and in-person scouting to put together a transformative experience for everyone involved, and who has priceless local knowledge, connections, and experience.

  • 2 retreat co-hosts (Eva and Erin Austen Abbott) who love taking care of their travelers and every little detail, and have extensive experience in the worlds of art, design, education, and travel.

  • All exclusive visits, workshops, round tables, etc. with artists, as well as museum entries, tours, etc. as listed in the schedule. These are incredibly unique and valuable experiences with local creatives and our two co-hosts that most travelers wouldn’t be able to have on their own.

  • A group of vetted, fellow travelers who are generous in spirit, up for adventure, appreciative of creative work, and looking forward to exploring and bonding with each other.

  • Tips for servers & guides.

  • All food and drink for every meal mentioned in the schedule (basically all lunches and dinners), as well as soft drinks and snacks on hand throughout the retreat.

  • An airy, light-filled retreat house where we’ll gather each day, complete with a spacious kitchen, dining, and living area, a yoga studio, a pool, and a patio. Not to mention the views from every side!

WHAT IS THE TRIP PRICING?

  • Pricing for the next one will be determined at that time.

  • Once your application is accepted, you will be asked to pay a deposit. The remainder will be due approximately 90 days before the retreat begins.

  • Payment plans available upon request.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRIP PRICING?

  • Any meals, transportation, or activities you do during free time.

  • Any personal souvenirs and other shopping purchases.

  • Travel insurance and trip medical coverage (both HIGHLY recommended). You can find more information about this here.

  • Airfare, rental cars, and any other transportation to/from the town of Joshua Tree. If you’re flying in, the Palm Springs airport is only an hour away and is a charming, small, open air airport surrounded by cactus gardens. You can rent a car there and make the easy drive to Joshua Tree——maybe share a ride with others from the retreat? There are other airports you could fly into as well: Ontario (1.5 hours drive), John Wayne (2 hours), San Diego (2.5 hours), and Los Angeles (3 hours). If you're interested in sharing a rental car/ride, let us know and we’ll put you in touch with others who are, too.

  • Accommodations. This was deliberate in order to provide flexibility for retreat goers in regard to aesthetics, preferences, and budgets. There are so many great places to stay in and around Joshua Tree, and this way you can decide which one fits your own vibe, pocketbook, etc. If you’d like to share, we can put you in touch with others from the retreat who are also interested in that. Also, if you would like help in finding accomodations, Eva is happy to act as a concierge in helping to line that up for you! Please reach out to her at hello@evajorgensen.com. Also, here are a few recommendations, to give you an idea of options:

    • The 29 Palms Inn, from $185/night. This quirky paradise is spread out over 70 acres, with views of the mountains and its own hidden oasis. It’s been run by the same family for 5 generations, rooms are cozy and colorful, and there’s a beloved restaurant on site.

    • Pioneertown Motel, from $315/night. Eva did a site visit just a few weeks ago and this was a very charming, design boutique hotel located right in the historic Wild West enclave of Pioneertown, which is a really fun little place with shops, places to eat, even concerts.

    • The High Desert Motel, from $64/night. Eva has stayed here herself. It’s an old-school, no-frills budget motel, but it’s safe, in a great location right on the main road in Joshua Tree, and even has a little pool.

    • But honestly, we see AirBnb as being the best resource! There are so many great houses to rent in the Morongo Valley area.

    • In addition to all of the above recommendations, there are many, many more options on Google Maps, booking.com, hotels.com, AirBnb, etc. Again, feel free to reach out to Eva with questions or for help: hello@evajorgensen.com.

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION POLICY?

  • Because of all the up-front costs and labor incurred from planning a highly curated retreat like this, we cannot give refunds if you change your mind, become afraid to travel, or if something else comes up. Trip cancellation insurance with a Cancel for Any Reason rider, as well as medical and evacuation coverage is highly recommended for everyone.

  • However, if we have someone on our waitlist who would like to take your place, and/or if you are able to find someone to fill your spot, you may transfer/sell your spot to them, pending our approval and the standard application procedure.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THERE ARE RENEWED COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS OR A TRAVEL BAN?

  • In the event of renewed Covid-19 travel-related restrictions or travel bans imposed by the relevant authorities in the US that make it impossible to travel or to do the majority of the planned activities, we will postpone the trip to a later date, making our best efforts to choose new dates that work for everyone, so that you do not lose your deposit and we all still get to go on the trip.

  • If you are unable to make the new dates work, and if we do not have someone on the waitlist to take your spot, you may find someone to fill/purchase your spot, pending our approval.

WHAT ARE YOUR VALUES?

  • We are committed to cultivating a culture of kindness and connectedness on this trip for all, and ask that all participants do the same.

  • We believe in the transformative nature of travel, especially through connections made with people, whether they’re locals or fellow travelers.

  • We are able to grow and learn better together with a diverse group of people. In recruiting for this retreat, we welcome the unique contributions that you can bring in terms of education, opinions, culture, ethnicity, race, gender expression, nation of origin, age, languages spoken, veteran’s status, color, religion, disability, sexual orientation, size, beliefs, etc.

  • Supporting, celebrating, and gathering inspiration from independent artists, makers, designers, artisans, chefs, etc. is a critical part of everything we do, including these trips & retreats, the  Paris by Design book, Letters from Eva, etc.

  • We know that giving back is important to many of you, and it’s an essential part of our ethos, too. A percentage of proceeds from each guided trip and retreat is donated to vetted non-profits doing crucial work. Non-profits we’ve donated to include our local food pantry, World Central Kitchen, First Peoples’ Fund, Give Kids the World Village, Active Minds, the United Way, The Trevor Project, the Apollo Theater, and more.

Please note that this is a past creative retreat, although it will probably be on offer again in the future. If you’d like to be in the loop on upcoming trips and retreats as they launch, sign up for the trips & retreats contact list here. Also, feel free to come along on one of our scheduled design trips, sign up for free travel/design/art inspiration via Letters from Eva, and email Eva directly if you’d like to request this specific retreat: hello@evajorgensen.com.
